I have been patiently waiting for, and had placed a hold on, a book that I have been wanting to read. On Saturday I received an email saying that the book was available. Excitedly I checked to see what time they closed. Unfortunately they closed at 5:30, the same time I get off work. I thought, well I'll just have my wife go pick the book up for me. I called the library to explain the situation and that my wife would come pick up the book. But... Nope.... that is impossible. That, I am afraid, is not allowed. I leave town tomorrow, and now will not be able to check the book out. I truly do not understand why I could not authorize someone to pick up the book for me. Absolutely unbelievable.... They offered no help, and acted as if I was bothering them. I was so excited; Yay! I can take the book on my vacation. The library took my excitement.

No. 2: Computer usage area staff NEVER bother to announce "Hello, welcome. If you need assistance I am here. And here's a sheet explaining costs (i.e., printing). NOT EVERY VISITOR IS A LOCAL TO KINGSPORT NOR TENNESSEE! AND NOT EVERY VISITOR IS CAUCASIAN so face it & deal with that by leaving your personal opinions AT HOME where they come from.

This place is wonderful. They have great helpers there if you need them I always have

No. 1: Staff can be rather offensive in behavior! Off-putting. Sounding assumptive! Sounding perturbed. Making one desire to avoid them!

I have book projects out through the the summer and so I get a lot of audio books for my projects!

No. 4: Why not, UPON ENTRY position a huge board to showcase Library Events, Specialty Categories for Researcher's, and a Floorplan Ptint-out specifying each area in most basic detail. Specifically communicating Daily/weekly/monthly events.

The books that I want.

All the above would be wiser for ALL LIBRARIES to adopt, supply, and offer.

No. 3: Some visitors even need instructs/guidelines or procedures on whether outside devices such as flash drives, smartphones, laptops, etc. can be tethered/connected to library equipment once pre-checked for viruses by a library staff clerk.

If I could give this library zero stars I would. If you go to this library and Barney Fife is working as their guard, be prepared to be harassed and followed like you were a criminal. He particularly likes to pick on women checking out books and children completing homework assignments. He is a bored rent-a-cop on a serious power trip. I've had horrible experiences at this library with him three times now. If you are an adult picking up books in the "teen area" by J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Scott Westerfield, Rick Riordan or any of the other popular series located in that section the guard will be in your face within minutes asking you to leave. Even if you are a teen that he perceives as not looking like a teen (because you're short) he will be in your face throwing you out of that section. If your child is sitting in a chair using a foot stool to balance his laptop on while quietly doing his homework, this guy will be on him in a second telling him how he is allowed to sit. Walk into this library holding your phone to your ear (you don't need to be talking) and this guard will literally chase you through the stacks threatening you the entire time. If you complain about him, he'll target you for harassment every time you dare to go into the library. And management there is of no help whatsoever. I'll drive to another city with a better library just to avoid him.

I have visited the Kingsport Library multiple times over the last five years with and without kids. I have also visited multiple rural and city libraries in many states. Kingsport Library is an excellent small city library that offers new and classic selections and services, and hosts free clubs, fun events, and educational classes throughout the year. There's frequently free events for young children and/or teens. I always see new books on current topics, they have an inviting children's room with a play area, an area just for teens, anime and graphic novels, a great research area with helpful, friendly service, a small business section for entrepreneurs, a decent magazine selection, newspapers, lots of computers to use for free (Free WiFi), and plenty of plugs throughout the library for laptop and tablet charging. You can print from email and pick it up later or make onsite copies. They even have a 3D printer! There is a park next door with outdoor plugs, so if the smell of Kingsport isn't obnoxious you can sit outside and read or study. I think the library has a meeting room you can rent (but not sure). I've always had professional service from staff and volunteers. The library is very clean, organized and well-kept. I'm a fan of the cheap books they have for sale, and hope to someday use the highly recommended archive service I heard is available (which unfortunately conflicts with my work schedule).
